We could make much better music with a little bit of help from our friends
Monday 23 January 2006

Just Us Band Rod Slape and Lyn Griffin, two of the three people who make up “Just Us” Three pensioners from South Australia, with a love of country music and a flair for playing and singing it, wanted to put their talent to good use.

Rod Slape, Lyn Griffin and Bev Martin formed a band, “Just Us”, and have been entertaining patients at nursing homes and in hospitals in the Owen district.

Recently they moved to the York Peninsula and bookings are already coming in from hospitals and nursing homes in that district.

The three donate their time but according to Rod, “the joy we bring to the elderly and ill is payment enough”.

However keeping a band together and travelling is a costly exercise and even harder for pensioners.

AKUBRA have provided them with new hats and a local store outfitted them with jeans and shirts. Rod re-built a 1982 Ford, converted it to gas and built a trailer to carry their equipment in.

“Every time you travel in the country it is expensive because of the distance and the cost of fuel,” Rod said.

However the band is still not complete. “We need a drum machine and speakers to put through the mixer,” Rod said. “Those items are not cheap and if someone could help us it would be appreciated.

“It would make the music so much more enjoyable for the people listening to us.”
