Bondi Cowboy

Dion Horstmans

Dion Horstmans is often dubbed the "Bondi Cowboy," a unique blend of urban edge and rural spirit.

Hailing from the iconic Bondi Beach area, he embodies the laid-back, surf culture that Bondi is famous for, but with a twist—a rugged, cowboy-esque flair that sets him apart. His style and persona are a mix of coastal cool and outback grit, bringing the best of both worlds together. Dion’s artistic endeavours, community presence, and distinctive personality make him a true representation of the Bondi Cowboy spirit.

What’s your go-to Akubra, and why?
Ah, it’s gotta be the Black Bronco. This thing is more than just a hat—it’s a statement. Seriously, it’s the kind of cowboy hat that just makes you feel like you’re owning the world. Rugged, bold, and always up for adventure.

If you had to describe Akubra in five words, what would they be?
Let’s see... Authentic, rugged, Australian, quality... and COOL. No other way to put it.

Tell us about your art and what a day in your life looks like.
I'm a full-time artist, and I work with steel—my sculptures play with ideas of space, momentum, and velocity. I drive around in a 1984 F100 that’s as classic as my hat, and yeah, I’m usually rocking my Black Bronco Akubra. Well, except when I’m swimming—then I park the truck and the hat!

What do you love most about Australia and its people?
I just recently became an Australian citizen, and I can’t begin to express how awesome it feels. I’ve travelled all over this country—it’s wild, raw, and beautifully untamed. There’s a sense of opportunity here, a chance to carve out your own path. I’m proud to be a part of that, proud of what I’ve built here. And it’s not just the landscapes; Australia’s got this incredible cultural mix, all overseen with respect to our First Nations people. I’m truly grateful to be a part of it. Thank you, Australia.
