BENEATH THE BRIM WITH

Ash Zadow

Sheep & Cattle Farmer

Based on a sheep and cattle station in South Australia, Ash has built a following by sharing the realities of life on the land. Through Outback with Ash,, she offers an authentic window into rural Australia, documenting everything from station work and livestock management to the beauty and challenges of the Australian outback, with her much-loved working dogs often stealing the spotlight.

We sat down with Ash to talk about her connection to the bush, life outdoors, and what continues to draw her back to the wide open spaces she calls home.

The Outback Uncovered

WHAT FIRST SPARKED YOUR LOVE FOR THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK?

I've always had a deep appreciation for the Australian bush, but once I started working on cattle stations, it quickly became more than just a passion. It became a way of life. The wide open spaces, hardworking communities and connection to the land are what keep drawing me back. There's nowhere else I'd rather be.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU ON THE LAND?

No two days are ever the same, and that's what I love most about it. One day I might be mustering cattle on horseback, and the next I could be fencing, feeding stock or heading out to explore another part of the country. Life in the Australian outback keeps you on your toes, and every day brings something new.

Sharing Her Story

WHAT DREW YOU TO SHARING YOUR JOURNEY ONLINE?

I wanted to give people a genuine glimpse into life in the Australian outback. Not everyone gets the chance to experience station life, and I love being able to share both the challenges and the incredible moments that come with it. If my content encourages more people to appreciate rural Australia, then I've achieved what I set out to do.

WHAT'S ONE THING PEOPLE OFTEN MISUNDERSTAND ABOUT LIFE IN THE OUTBACK?

Many people think it's isolated or uneventful, but the reality is quite the opposite. It's full of adventure, hard work and some of the strongest communities you'll ever find. Life out here teaches resilience, and there's a real sense of purpose in everything you do.

HOW IMPORTANT IS THE RIGHT GEAR WHEN YOU'RE WORKING OUTDOORS?

It's essential. When you're spending long days outdoors, you need gear you can rely on. Your hat, boots and clothing all have to work as hard as you do. Comfort, durability and protection from the Australian elements make all the difference.

WHAT MAKES AN AKUBRA AN ESSENTIAL PART OF YOUR KIT?

An Akubra is something I wear every single day. It protects me from the harsh Australian sun, stands up to tough conditions and never lets me down. It's practical, reliable and has become part of who I am whenever I'm out on the land.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE AKUBRA HAT, AND WHY?

The Akubra Riverina. I love the shape, the fit and how versatile it is. Whether I'm working cattle, travelling or spending time outdoors, it suits just about every occasion while still being built for the bush.

WHAT'S THE BEST ADVICE YOU'D GIVE TO SOMEONE WANTING TO EXPERIENCE THE OUTBACK FOR THE FIRST TIME?

Keep an open mind and be prepared to get a little dusty. The Australian outback has a way of surprising you, and some of the best experiences happen when you step outside your comfort zone. Respect the land, take your time and enjoy the journey.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR OUTBACK WITH ASH?

I'm looking forward to exploring even more of Australia's incredible outback, sharing new adventures and continuing to showcase the people, places and stories that make rural Australia so special. There's still so much to discover, and I can't wait to bring everyone along for the ride.
