Best hat Akubra have made in a while

"I've always had an Akubra (or two or three). The iconic Federation IV, Rough Rider, Sombrero. . . all are in my stable. I haven't bothered with buying anything Akubra on recent years, as most of the new styles seem to be aimed at city folk rather than at those who traditionally wear Akubra. I haven't been captured by any of them (especially noting the prices these days). However. . . The Old West entered the arena. Everything changed. The Old West is easily one of the best styled hats Akubra have come out with in a long time. Together with the Federation IV, it's probably one of the best hats made in my view. Although I'm not bothering with most new Akubra styles, The Old West takes Akubra back to its roots for me. I'll likely pick up another one to keep pristine (yes, it's that good)."

I'm a size 59 and

"I'm a size 59 and at first it was too big, I was surprised because my other Akubra's are spot on . . . . Banjo Patterson, Lawson, Snowy River. So I padded it out, but after a couple of weeks of wear it shrunk down to my head and became tight so I had to remove the padding. It's now a perfect fit and is my favourite hat, Fantastic quality !"

Sometimes different is good

"At first I was unsure of the hat. Always worn a Bronco or Rough Rider. Ordered it and once it shaped to my head I love it. Now my daily hat with the Akubra bandanna on the outside to make it a little unique"

Found the one

"Solid hat, wears well on women too. It's a timeless piece and having worn Akubra my whole life, this style with a little bashing to bring the front and rear down so the water escapes is well worth it. I also changed the ribbon band to a horsehair. It is stiffer than the usual and will hold its' shape well over time."

Akubra - The Old West

"Akubra - The Old West is a timeless classic. A medium size brim which is slightly turned up. Ideal for formal, or casual wear, internal lining and superb finish it makes an ideal addition to any Akubra collection."

The Old West runs very

"The Old West runs very small compared to my many other Akubra hats. So far it has been unusually resistant to stretching and remains unwearable."

At first I was unsure

"At first I was unsure about this hat seeing it online. In person it is so much better. Nice firm brim. Felt feels great. Wear it to work everyday now"

Q&A

WORN BY RODEO ICON & LIVING LEGEND

BOB HOLDER

The Old West hat style is defined by its curled or “shacked” brim, a look strongly associated with Australian bush hats and outback culture.

More than just a design detail, the upturned sides serve a practical purpose, keeping the hat secure while riding through scrub, working on the land, or facing strong winds, while also allowing for better visibility and freedom of movement. Among Aussie stockmen, ringers, and bushmen, the brim shape often reflects personal style, regional tradition, and years of experience. Over time, this curled brim has evolved into an iconic symbol of rural Australia, representing resilience, independence, and a no-nonsense spirit shaped by life on the land.

It’s this same essence that defines Bob Holder, Australia’s oldest competing rodeo cowboy, whose story embodies the heritage and enduring character of the outback.
