Few artists embody the future of Australian music quite like Budjerah — the ARIA Award-winning artist whose soulful sound, honest storytelling and unmistakable voice have rapidly established him as one of the country’s most compelling new talents.

A Coodjinburra man from the Bundjalung nation in northern New South Wales, Budjerah has become known for blending soul, R&B and contemporary Australian storytelling into a sound that feels both fresh and deeply authentic. Since releasing his breakout single “Missing You” in 2020, he has toured with global artists including Ed Sheeran, performed across some of Australia’s biggest stages and built a reputation as one of the country’s defining young creative voices.

The Next Generation Of Australian Music Legends

Australian music has always been shaped by storytellers. From legends like Slim Dusty to a new wave of artists redefining what Australian music sounds like today, the connection between music, identity and place continues to evolve.

Wearing the Akubra Slim Dusty, a hat named in honour of one of Australia’s greatest music icons, Budjerah represents the next chapter of Australian music culture. The Slim Dusty has long symbolised authenticity, individuality and the spirit of Australian storytelling.

On Budjerah, that legacy takes on a new generation. Grounded in culture, creativity and modern Australian identity, he reflects the evolving face of Australian music while carrying forward the same sense of character and connection that made Slim Dusty an icon in the first place.

On Music, Country & Connection

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHERE YOU COME FROM?

My name is Budjerah, I’m from Fingal Head and I’m a singer. Storytelling, family and my connection to Country are at the heart of my music. A lot of my inspiration comes from growing up between the coast and the outback, and from the Indigenous artists and family members who shaped the way I see music and culture.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO WEAR AN AKUBRA?

Wearing an Akubra feels special to me. It reminds me of my family history and stories from when I was younger, especially stories my Great Grandmother still tells me today. It feels connected to adventure, memory and a part of Australia that means a lot to me.

WHAT DOES THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK MEAN TO YOU?

The outback holds a lot of memories for me. I remember driving overnight from Fingal Head to Brewarrina with my family when I was younger. We ended up camping on the side of the road before seeing family the next day, and I still remember waking up to the sunrise over the red dirt and bush. Those experiences stay with you and shape how you see the world.

WHICH ARTISTS AND INFLUENCES HAVE SHAPED YOUR MUSIC?

Artists like Yothu Yindi, Archie Roach and Warumpi Band inspired me a lot growing up. They broke through barriers at a time when people thought it wasn’t possible, and because of them I could see a future for myself in music. My family has also shaped my music in a huge way. They introduced me to great music early on and encouraged me to try new things creatively.

WHAT DOES RESILIENCE MEAN TO YOU?

Resilience is really important to me. This country has been through a lot and so many stories have come before us, but strength and resilience are why people are still here today. I think it’s important we hold onto what makes us special, while also leading with more respect and love for each other as we move forward.
