Q&A
How do you balance modelling, sport, and community back home?
The biggest lesson for me is dedication. Growing up, the values my parents taught me made me committed to everything I do. Footy also reinforced that. If you want to succeed, you need to give it your all. Sport is such a big part of my family’s culture, and I always want to honour them by giving my best. That focus and discipline continues to guide me in my modelling career as an Indigenous Australian model.
What is it about home and family that you carry with you, no matter where your career takes you?
Growing up in a big, strong family taught me so many values and lessons from everyone around me. Those experiences have shaped who I am today. Carrying those values and lessons into my career and life is really important to me.
Working internationally, what differences do you notice between global fashion and Australian style?
Globally, fashion can feel very trend-driven. Everyone wants to follow the latest trends. In Australia, though, we approach style in a more relaxed and effortless way. Trends are part of it, but it is more about feeling confident and comfortable in what you wear rather than striving for perfection.
Where do you feel most yourself and why?
I feel most myself at home in Darwin with my family and friends. It is where I feel grounded and connected to my authentic self. Home reminds me of everything I have learned along the way and who my family has helped shape me to be.
Walking through the Akubra workshop, what struck you about the skill, care, and attention involved in making a hat?
What really stood out was the patience and pride in every single step. You can feel the respect for the craft and for the generations who perfected these techniques. It reminded me that true quality comes from time, care, and people who genuinely love what they do.
Seeing a hat pass through 66 pairs of hands over 162 steps, did it change how you think about craftsmanship and tradition?
Absolutely. It deepened my appreciation for handcrafted pieces and the stories behind them. Seeing how many people contribute to one finished hat highlighted how tradition is kept alive through community and shared knowledge. It made me value craftsmanship not just as a skill, but as a living Australian legacy.
Did visiting the workshop give you a new perspective on handmade work in today’s world?
Yes. It reminded me that handmade craftsmanship still has an important place in a fast-moving, digital world. There is something special about knowing a piece has been shaped by real people, not just machines. Handmade pieces carry character, intention, and soul.
How would you describe the essence of Akubra?
For me, Akubra is timeless. It stays true to its roots while fitting seamlessly into today’s world. It stands for durability, heritage, and quiet confidence. It does not chase trends. It does what it does well and lasts. That is what makes it an iconic part of Australian fashion.
